English Program Overview

Students who wish to enroll at Benedictine University and do not have the required TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score can apply for both ESL classes and admission to Benedictine University at the same time. The ESL program at the Benedictine Abraham Lincoln English Institute (ALEI) is a non degree-seeking program specifically designed to support English language learners. Here, students will focus on building their reading, writing and conversation skills. Upon achieving the required TOEFL score, students can begin taking regular college coursework at the Lisle campus.

Students are also offered additional language help at the Benedictine Lisle campus, where they can take advantage of the language support programs. The Academic Discourse Series is a series of academic preparatory courses that are specifically designed to help international students make the transition to American academic life. Students can also take advantage of the conversation workshops and host family program to practice their language with American students and families.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

To ensure the success of our international students, Benedictine University offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at our Springfield branch campus. Students who wish to enroll at Benedictine University and do not have the required TOEFL score can apply for both ESL classes and admission to Benedictine University at the same time using the Asia Institute Application Forms (Undergraduate or Graduate). Students who place at the advanced level of ESL program may take an appropriate credit-bearing course in addition to their ESL classes. This enables students to earn credit toward their Benedictine University degree and gives them a quick start in pursuit of their degrees.

Students without a TOEFL score may be accepted to Benedictine University at Springfield's Abraham Lincoln English Institute. If all requirements are met, conditional acceptance into the academic program is granted based on successful completion of the Benedictine ESL program. Upon achieving the required TOEFL score, students can begin taking regular college coursework.

The ESL program at the Abraham Lincoln English Institute is a non-degree program specifically designed to support English language learners. The program's format is an intensive, eight-week session, offered four times per academic year. Students are encouraged to join campus clubs, take field trips and immerse themselves in American culture. Located the state capital, Benedictine University at Springfield provides its students an opportunity to experience the local culture of an area that is part of the American interior. We look forward to welcoming you into Benedictine's vibrant educational experience.
